Thomas Newman, UAF graduate

French Major, Principles of Nursing minor, 2020

“Dr. Yelena Matusevich and I met by complete chance, and without her help I wouldn’t be where I am today. Thanks to her continuous support, even from abroad, I was able to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Language: French, with a Minor in Principles of Nursing. I’m currently in the process of preparing for a Master of Science degree program in Communicative Disorders to work as a Speech Language Pathologist (speech therapist). This career choice is the perfect blend of both of my study areas, foreign language and nursing. What I enjoyed most from the French program at UAF was the opportunity to live abroad (in Switzerland) while going to school. Studying and analyzing great works of French literature, such as Guy de Maupassant, were also things I loved while in Dr. Matusevich’s classes. She was completely right when she told me, ‘Learning French will do you wonders.'”
